The Jewish Federation of Omaha is excited to announce that renowned scholar, author, and co-president of the Shalom Hartman Institute, Dr. Yehuda Kurtzer, will join the Omaha Jewish community for 2025’s Tapestry: A Celebration of Jewish Learning as the scholar-in-residence May1–10 at various locations throughout the community.

Dr. Kurtzer will be a part of Shabbat Services at Temple Israel on Friday, May9 where he will speak on Loving Your Friends, Your Neighbors, and Your Enemies: On Community and Conflict. Jewish people hood is premised on a paradox: we are a people made up of tribes. This means we assume some amount of conflict and difference in how we imagine the very construct of the Jewish people.Meanwhile, the Torah obligates us to love our fellows, including those in our midst with whom we are in conflict. How do we balance our need and responsibility to build cross-communal relationships while respecting difference and building a wide enough community that can even sustain conflict?
